Aims of Module

To provide the student with the ability to understand key sociological and psychological concepts which inform the delivery of social work services.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of sociology, including concepts of inequality and diversity.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of psychological theories in relation to practice in social work.

Indicative Module Content

Sociological theory and concepts.
Sociology of the family, health, groups and organisation.
Social divisions, deviance and social exclusion: underclass theories.
Psychological theory and concepts.
Humanistic model, cognitive development, learning theories, psychodynamic model.

The module aims to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of sociological concepts and theories of psychology by addressing issues of childhood, children, adolescence, individuals, families, communities and society. The specific child centred components of the module reflect the knowledge requirements within Key Capabilities in Child Care and Child Protection (Scottish Executive, 2006). The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti discriminatory and anti oppressive principles and upholds the values and ethical practice standards of Key Capabilities.
