Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to understand the law relating to social work practice in order to locate and apply specific areas of law to the provision and delivery of welfare services

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate introductory knowledge of the civil law systems.
2 Demonstrate introductory knowledge and understanding of criminal law.
3 Demonstrate introductory knowledge of laws which provide the legal basis for social work intervention.

Indicative Module Content
Civil and criminal court systems. Children's and family legal systems. Basic rules of evidence. Confidentiality and Access to Records. Anti-discriminatory law. Basic law relating to social work practice. This module is a generic introduction to social work law. There is a specific focus on key matters which reflects requirements relating to engagement with public protection. In addition coverage of human rights and anti-discriminatory legislation, vulnerable witnesses, confidentiality and data protection.

Module Delivery
Introductory lectures, independent study using prepared interactive materials reinforced by tutorial contact.
