Aims of Module
To provide the student with a sociological understanding, based on empirical evidence and theory, of key dimensions of everyday life including urbanisation, the environment, time and social inequality.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Describe theoretically the concept of a socially constructed world.
2 Explain a key site wherein everyday life is socially constructed.
3 Demonstrate an understanding of social transformation and its impact upon individuals, communities and the environment.

Indicative Module Content
Theories of social construction. Theories of Urbanisation. Community and social change. Costs of urbanisation. Theories of inequality. Sociology of the internet. Waste and pollution. Resource depletion. Environmentalism. Time as a subjective, cultural and structural concept. Time and memory. Modernity and postmodernity. Theories and practices of neo-liberalism. Human Rights and Global Development.
