Aims of Module | |||

To provide the student with a sociological understanding, based on empirical evidence and theory, of key dimensions of everyday life including urbanisation, the environment, time and social inequality. |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Describe theoretically the concept of a socially constructed world. |
2 | Explain a key site wherein everyday life is socially constructed. |
3 | Demonstrate an understanding of social transformation and its impact upon individuals, communities and the environment. |

Theories of social construction. Theories of Urbanisation. Community and social change. Costs of urbanisation. Theories of inequality. Sociology of the internet. Waste and pollution. Resource depletion. Environmentalism. Time as a subjective, cultural and structural concept. Time and memory. Modernity and postmodernity. Theories and practices of neo-liberalism. Human Rights and Global Development. |
