Aims of Module

To provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of the relationship between contemporary society and welfare services for children and young people.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Explain the relationship between social policy, politics and society.
2. Explain the concept of "social construction of childhood".
3. Provide an analysis of social exclusion as it affects children and young people and the responses of political, legal and social welfare in institutions.
4. Identify the historical context of institutional care to the present day.

Indicative Module Content

Social policy, politics and society. Social policy and the health service, personal social services and education. Social exclusion, analysis and responses. Social policy and disability. Children's Rights. Social construction and childhood. Public care - history and present context. Scottish social pedagogy.
