Aims of Module
To enable the student to understand, apply and evaluate a range of key concepts underpinning evidenced-based and reflective social work practice.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Explain the use of appropriate communication and interviewing skills within professional practice.

Apply a range of approaches to assessment, intervention and evaluation across a range of settings.

Demonstrate skills in reflective practice.

Apply ethical and anti-discriminatory concepts to the practice of social work.

Apply reflective skills and knowledge of basic research methodology to social work practice.

Indicative Module Content
Social work values and ethical dilemmas. Symbolic, verbal and non verbal communication. Intervention skills and the use of questions. Methods of assessment and risk assessment. Methods of intervention including: advocacy; life space skills; opportunity-led; task-centred; psycho-social; behavioural; care management; family therapy and group work. Overview of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Evidenced based practice. Reflective practice. Anti-oppressive practice; Key capabilities in Child Care and Child Protection; Legislative Framework; Cultural Competence.
