Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to understand the law relating to social work practice in order to locate specific areas of law in a wider framework.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Distinguish between the Scottish civil and criminal law systems.

Identify laws which provide the legal basis for social work intervention.

3. |
Explain the relevance and application of anti-discriminatory law and data protection law applying to sex, race and disability.

4. |
Explain the relevance and application of family law as it applies to marriage, divorce and separation, parentage and parental rights and responsibilities.

5. |
Explain the relevance and application of the Childen Act (Scotland) 1995 in regard to principles, rights and responsibilities and orders.

Indicative Module Content
Civil and criminal court systems. Children's and family systems. Basic rules of evidence. Confidentiality and access to Records. Anti-discriminatory law. Family law pertaining to marriage, separation, divorce, children and domestic violence and powers available to the courts. Children's Hearings system. Child Care and Group Care Legislation.
