Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to understand key sociological and social policy concepts which inform analysis of contemporary social welfare and institutions.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Apply sociological perspectives to the concept of socialisation, health, family, ethnicity, class, gender, poverty, social institutions and social problems.

Apply relevant social policy analysis and response to a range of contemporary social issues and problems.

Explain the relationship between social policy, politics and society.

Provide an analysis of social exclusion and responses of political and social welfare institutions.

Understand the significance of sociological and social policy concepts on social work practice.

Indicative Module Content
Sociological theory and concepts. Forming and implementing social policy: government, politics, groups and organisations. Sociology of the family. Social policy and the health service, personal social services, social security, employment and housing. Social policy and disability: models, policies and legislation. Social divisions, deviance and social exclusion: underclass theories. Demographic change and older people.
