To provide a foundation in the study of criminology in an applied context, and introducing the key concepts. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Understand the legal definitions of crime and criminal behaviour in Scotland and the wider UK |
2 | Apply these definitions to relevant behaviour on the spectrum from single acts by individuals to organised crime, and distinguish them from each other |
3 | Understand the core social science concepts of deviance and criminal |
4 | Apply those concepts to key offences on the spectrum from individual to group behaviour |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
The module draws on legal and social science perspectives of crime and deviance. For example, the social science element will outline the 'classic' and contemporary approaches to crime and deviance in order to introduce an analytical and critical disposition to criminology. It will set out the key definitions and framework of criminal law. |
