Aims of Module
To provide the student with an understanding of some basic political concepts, the nature of ideology and the key characteristics of specific political ideologies.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Explain the meaning of some basic political ideas.

Explain the main features of political ideologies in general.

Outline the main beliefs and values that are associated with one particular political ideology.

Indicative Module Content
Politics, political philosophy and political science. Power and the state. Democracy and its different forms. Liberty and liberty-limiting principles. Different conceptions of social justice. The concept of political ideology. Liberalism. Conservatism and the New Right. Socialism and the Third Way.
| Feminism and gender. Nationality and nationalism. Religious fundamentalism and Islamism.

Mode of Delivery
