Aims of Module
To increase understanding of the variable needs of different individuals, families and groups within society. To provide an initial understanding of communication, interviewing and assessment skills as well as a grasp of basic groupwork knowledge.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Show understanding of the nature of appropriate communication, interviewing and assessment skills within social work practice.
2 Show understanding of the nature and application of groupwork theory.
3 Show understanding of the significant issues concerning need and experience of discrimination relating to marginalised groups in society.

Indicative Module Content
Communication, interviewing and assessment skills. Social work with a range of individuals, families and groups. Group process and groupwork theory. The concept of oppression and an anti-oppressive practice. Ethical perspectives on issues relating to difference, discrimination and disadvantage. Reflects the knowledge, skills and professional confidence and competence requirements around engagement with public protection.

Module Delivery
The core knowledge will be delivered by lecture. Understanding and application will be facilitated by the use of seminars.
