Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to understand the legal system of Scotland and the law relating to parent and child, and to understand Scottish politics in relation to the main Scottish, UK-wide and European political institutions, structures and processes and their relevance to the development and implementation of social policies and social work.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Understand the Scottish Legal System.
2 Outline the law on parent and child and legal capacity.
3 Identify key political institutions, systems and processes and their relevance to the organisation and delivery of social work services.

Indicative Module Content
The Scottish Courts and legal personnel. Parentage and Parental responsibilities and rights. Adoption and Fostering. The main Scottish and UK-wide political structures and processes. Scottish political systems in relation to social policy and social work. Scottish Local Government, the main European Union Institutions. Reflects the knowledge, skills and professional confidence and competence requirements around engagement with public protection.
