Aims of Module
To provide the student with an understanding of basic social science research methodology and key student skills.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Identify the key stages of the research process, and appropriately convey this information in the presentation.
2 Demonstrate an awareness of key student presentation/group working skills
3 Demonstrate an understanding of basic research methodologies used in the social sciences.

Indicative Module Content
What is research? The research process. Basic research methodologies: Observational, Surveys and Experimental. Research designs and sampling. Ethics, bias and positionality of research and researchers. Interpreting statistics and data analysis: an introduction. Study skills and effective learning. Presentation and IT skills. Reading research and evaluation.

Module Delivery
This is a mainly lecture based module with supporting seminars/ workshops and student centred-learning. The on-campus activities will be supplemented and supported with online activities where appropriate.
