Aims of Module
To develop an understanding of the application of Human Factors to quality improvement in medicine use in healthcare.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explore and critically comment on the application of Human Factors in quality improvement of medicine use in healthcare with a focus on patient safety.
2 Critically appraise methods utilised for quality improvement and patient safety in the use of medicines.
3 Develop an understanding of the approaches used to measure and monitor quality improvement of medicine use in healthcare with a focus on patient safety.
4 Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of how Human Factors and quality improvement can be applied in practice to underpin the resilience of systems for medicines use.

Indicative Module Content
Human Factors: how knowledge and competency can underpin systems understanding to allow intelligent re-design to optimise outcomes including safety and quality in relation to medicines use, including the development of a safe and sustainable culture of medicines use in practice. Quality improvement and patient safety definitions, overarching principles and approaches. Management, leadership and organisational factors that may influence quality and patient safety in the use of medicines.

Module Delivery
This module will be delivered online through use of module material, online lectures and webinars. Students will apply and contextualise knowledge and understanding of topics in discussion fora online.
