Aims of Module
To develop professional competence in therapeutic areas with emphasis on rational prescribing.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge of pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology and evidence based therapeutics.
2 Critically evaluate a variety of data to aid drug selection and monitoring for individual patients.
3 Systematically utilise evidence to critically evaluate patient data to solve therapeutic problems and synthesise a therapeutic plan.

Indicative Module Content
Disease characteristics: epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, signs/symptoms, abnormal results. Use of patient data including physical examination, physiological, biochemical and haematological parameters, to select, optimise and monitor drug therapy for conditions. Therapeutic topics include: cardiovascular, endocrinology, respiratory, musculoskeletal, infections, oncology, haematology, psychiatry, neurological conditions, gastrointestinal diseases. Drugs for the diseases: clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics. Therapeutic planning: evidence based approach to drug selection, monitoring: effectiveness and toxicity, counselling. Factors influencing prescribing and selection of therapy including patients' characteristics and drug factors, aspects of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Management options including non-drug treatment.

Online delivery; self-directed learning supported by web-based learning materials, peer to peer learning, participation in synchronous and asynchronous webinars and discussion fora.
