Aims of Module
To enable the student to apply knowledge and skills in the competent performance of tasks required of the biomedical scientist.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate continued competence in health & safety practice.
2 Communicate effectively through written and oral means.
3 Perform duties competently in a hospital laboratory environment with increasing independence.
4 Reflect on the biomedical science practice of self and others.
5 Demonstrate competence in advanced biomedical science laboratory manipulative and reporting techniques.

Indicative Module Content
This hospital based practice module will include experiential learning involving maximally supervised practice and orientation within two different hospital laboratory departments. Attendance and participation at appropriate meetings, opportunities for reporting and recording, completion of learning objectives defined by the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for biomedical scientists, opportunities to reflect on and discuss the clinical setting, opportunities to explore personal strengths and weaknesses. Application of relevant biomedical science techniques.

Module Delivery
This is a work based module, which comprises two 7 week periods in different designated hospital laboratories. In addition the student will undertake 50 hours of directed reading and 60 hours of private study.

Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:
Pass A satisfactory response to each individual Standard of Proficiency
Fail An unsatisfactory response to one or more of the Standards of Proficiency.
NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination

Prerequisites for Module Successful completion of Stage 2 of the course, or equivalent.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Students on hospital based laboratory placements will normally receive a minimum of one liaison visit from a member of academic staff to monitor student's progress and integrate academic based studies with hospital laboratory experience.
