Aims of Module
To provide students with an understanding of the factors impacting on the health of human and animal populations across the world.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Describe the environmental factors which influence the occurrence of communicable diseases in humans and animals.
2 Explain the contribution of environmental factors to the global burden of non-communicable diseases in humans and animals.
3 Explain the effects of climate change and economic inequalities on the global burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
4 Describe strategies designed to improve population health in humans and animals.

Indicative Module Content
Occurrence and spread of water-, air- and food-borne microbial and parasitic diseases; zoonoses; spread of microbial and parasitic disease; malaria; cholera; dysentery; polio; HIV and AIDS; ebola virus; zika virus; vaccinations; pollution; sanitation; water-treatment strategies; smoking; asbestos; obesity; starvation; nutrient deficiencies, including endemic iodine deficiency, vitamin A deficiency; iron; alcohol; WHO; UN and UNHCR; FAO; International Red Cross; DEFRA; OIE_WOAH; governmental approaches to promoting health; emerging challenges to population health e.g. antimicrobial resistance (AMR), climate change, biodiversity and urbanisation.
