Aims of Module
To develop knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles and concepts of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and evidence-based therapeutics and integration of these into therapeutic plans for individual patients.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamentals of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and evidence-based therapeutics.
2 Justify suitable evidence-based therapeutic strategies of commonly occurring disease states.
3 Demonstrate the ability to use clinical skills including communication, consultation, data gathering from case notes, and physical assessment to improve health outcomes.

Indicative Module Content
Topics include the principles underpinning the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of therapeutics of the nervous system, acute pain, infectious diseases (including antimicrobials), the immune system and musculoskeletal diseases. Evidence-based therapeutics will include: identification of the goals of therapy, drug selection, adverse drug reactions, side effects, new therapies, monitoring and non-pharmacological management of common diseases in the above systems.

Module Delivery
This module is delivered with a mix of lectures and case study-based tutorials and practical lab sessions, supplemented by formative self-assessment.

D When the grade for Component 1(EX1) is an D and a PASS in Component 2(PE1).
E When the grade for Component 1(EX1) is an E and a PASS in Component 2(PE1).
F When the grade for Component 1(EX1) is an F and/or an unsuccessful attempt (i.e. a Fail) at Component 2(PE1).
