Aims of Module
To develop knowledge of what constitutes evidence base and how its applied in clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain the concept of what evidence base is and how this informs the development of local and national guidelines.
2 Describe appropriate literature search strategies and critically appraise and analyse research articles for their validity and relevance to pharmacy practice.
3 Understand the role of ethics and statistics in conducting research studies.
4 Explain the differences between different study designs and their application to pharmacoepidemiology.

Indicative Module Content
Research methodology, Quantitative and qualitative methods, Health economics, pharmacoepidemiology, Preparing a literature review, Putting research into practice, Principles of research ethics, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Critical Appraisal of medical evidence, Guidelines and development, Introduction to epidemiology, Statistical methods in research, study designs.

Module Delivery
Lectures, coursework sessions (including individual and group problem solving exercises and tutorial sessions) and directed study (including computer packages, directed reading, and self-assessment exercises).
