Aims of Module

To develop the required knowledge, skills and professional attitudes relating to UK legislation and the practice of pharmacy

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Apply a critical understanding of relevant UK pharmacy legislation, pharmacy practice frameworks and behavioural and social aspects relating to pharmacy practice.
2. Effectively relate theory to good standards of pharmacy practice.
3. Deal with complex ethical and professional issues.
4. Demonstrate the attainment of relevant interprofessional communication skills.

Indicative Module Content

Systematic coverage of the purpose and effect of statutes and subordinate pharmacy related legislation (all as currently amended) which affect the practice of pharmacy. Medicines supply processes and procedures with emphasis on dispensing including extemporaneous dispensing. Pharmaceutical calculations.
Social and behavioural sciences relevant to pharmacy including attitudes to health and healthcare and inequalities in health, determinants of health, psychosocial influences on health and delivery of healthcare, compliance and concordance. Interprofessional working.
Ethics and ethical decision making, the Standards of Conduct, Ethics and Performance of the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Clinical governance, health promotion and protection, addiction, complementary therapies, wound management.

Lectures, coursework sessions (to include individual and group problem solving sesions) seminars, placements and use of web-based sources of information and directed study.

C1 This will be a group presentation based on group work. The mark will include an element of peer assessment. This presentation will contribute 50% towards the final Module Grade. A minimum of 40% is required in this element to pass.

C3 Test 1 is a competency-based dispensing test assessed on a pass/fail basis.
Test 2 is a test of legislation and pharmaceutical calculations requiring a pass mark of 70%. These tests do not contribute to the module grade. Both elements will offer a formative exemption. opportunity.

C2 This will be a 2000 word essay to be submitted on a choice of title. This essay will contribute 50% towards the final Module Grade. A minimum of 40% is required in this element to pass.
