Aims of Module
To consider the non-clinical factors influencing prescribing decision making.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explore the application of theories of behaviour change to prescribing decision making at individual and organisational level.
2 Critically appraise the literature to develop a knowledge and understanding of evidence relating to influences of non-clinical factors on prescribing decision making.
3 Critically evaluate models of consultation to explore how they can be used to take account of non-clinical factors influencing prescribing decision making.
4 Reflect on and analyse complex prescribing decision making situations to examine how to respond effectively to individual patients' ideas, concerns and expectations.

Indicative Module Content
Theories of behaviour change such as the Theoretical Domains Framework. Psychosocial factors influencing prescribing decision making such as: accurate and effective communication, building and maintaining effective relationships, consultation models, patient demand versus patient need, external influences at individual, local and national level, awareness of own personal beliefs and their influence.

Module Delivery
The module is delivered in distance learning mode by self-directed learning from web based learning materials including self-assessment with answers. There is no face-to-face contact required for this online module. 'Contact' hours included in 'Indicative Workload' represent online discussions and other online interactions.

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module An undergraduate degree in a pharmacy, medical or nursing & midwifery related field from a UK university or overseas equivalent, and one year post-registration experience or in consultation with the Course Leader.
