Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explore critically the legal and professional frameworks of accountability and responsibility that allow the development of pharmacist prescribing between the UK and the student's own country.
2 Interpret and critically appraise a wide variety of sources of information, including medical history, physical examination, physiological monitoring to aid drug selection and monitoring for individual patients.
3 Communicate and consult effectively and show a professional ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal communication relevant to pharmacist prescribing, including an understanding of the patient's wishes and values.
4 Demonstrate a critical understanding and application of the skills, concepts and knowledge of pharmacist prescribing to consider the requirements for the development of such a service in the student's own country.

Indicative Module Content
Models of prescribing, legal basis for prescribing, policies, clinical governance, ethics, pharmacovigilance, record keeping, documentation, professional responsibility, accountability. Evidence based practice, critical appraisal skills, clinical guidelines, use of patient data including physical examination, physiological, biochemical and haematological parameters. Accurate and effective communication with patients, carers and other members of the health care team. Building and maintaining effective relationships, shared decision making, team working. Patient demand versus patient need, awareness of personal attitudes and influences on prescribing practice, factors influencing prescribing decisions including patients' characteristics. Legal, regulatory and professional frameworks for pharmacists which might underpin pharmacist prescribing in the local/national context. Planning of a pharmacists prescribing service.

E When C1 = E and C2 is passed.
F When C1 = F AND/OR C2 is failed.

Prerequisites for Module An undergraduate degree in pharmacy from a UK university or overseas equivalent, at a minimum of honours level and one year's post-registration experience OR an integrated masters degree in pharmacy (MPharm) and professional registration.
