Prerequisites for Module

An undergraduate degree in a pharmacy, medical or nursing & midwifery related field from a UK university or overseas equivalent, and two years post-registration experience.

Aims of Module

To provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate an ability to systematically and comprehensively analyse service provision relevant to prescribing within a specialist area of clinical practice.
To consider the non-clinical factors influencing prescribing decisions and outcomes.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Show evidence of professional ability in the systematic and judicious application of knowledge and understanding of the influences of non-clinical factors on prescribing.
2. Analyse prescribing situations and effectively manage change.
3. Appraise and discuss current issues relating to evidence based practice and clinical governance.
4. Critically evaluate factors affecting health, delivery of healthcare and formation of health policy in order to manage complex changes in public health policy relevant to prescribing.

Indicative Module Content

Accurate and effective communication, building and maintaining effective relationships, limitations, consultation models.

Patient demand versus patient need, external influences at individual, local and national needs, awareness of own personal attitudes and influence on prescribing practice.

Managing change.

Governance: clinical governance, clinical audit, risk assessment and management.

Evidence based practice, pharmacoepidemiology, critical appraisal.
