Aims of Module

To enable the student to integrate a sound knowledge of evidence based public health practice with prescribing policy and management.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of current issues relating to prescribing practice and public health.
2. Apply the skills, concepts and knowledge of evidence based practice to prescribing in a professional/vocational context.
3. Integrate skills, concepts and knowledge of public health to prescribing in professional/vocational practice.

Indicative Module Content

Overview of public health (core elements of public health, pharmaceutical public health, evidence based practice, critical appraisal skills, clinical guidelines, protocols, policies, decision support systems and formularies, clinical governance, clinical audit, risk assessment, risk management, medication errors, ethics, pharmacovigilance.)

Access to health and medicines. Use of medicines in populations. Inappropriate prescribing and inappropriate use of medicines. Duty to patients and society.
