Aims of Module
To develop knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles and concepts of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and evidence-based therapeutics and integration of these into therapeutic plans for individual patients.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamentals of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and evidence-based therapeutics.
2 Synthesise and justify suitable evidence-based therapeutic strategies.
3 Retrieve, evaluate, manipulate, interpret and present experimental/clinical data and information.
4 Utilise scientific principles to develop and defend therapeutic plans.

Indicative Module Content
Promoting the importance of evidence-based therapeutics, with an introduction to the skills needed to develop therapeutic plans for individual patients. Topics include: Pharmacology; mechanism of drug action; principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Evidence-based therapeutics of nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular and urinary systems. Evidence-based therapeutics incluidng: setting goals of therapy, drug selection, adverse drug reactions, side effects, new therapies, monitoring and non-pharmacological management of common diseases in the above systems.

Module Delivery
Lectures, coursework sessions (including individual and group problem solving exercises and tutorial sessions) and directed study (including computer packages, directed reading, and self-assessment exercises).

Component 1
Type: Examination Weighting: 50% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 2
Description: 1.5 hour written examination consisting of multiple-choice questions.
Component 2
Type: Examination Weighting: 50% Outcomes Assessed: 3, 4
Description: 2 hour written examination consisting of MCQ and short answer style questions on evidence-based therapeutics and case study material.

Explanatory Text
The first grade represents Component 1 (EX1) equally weighted with the second, Component 2 (EX2). A minimum of Module Grade D is required to pass the module. Non-submission of either component will result in an NS grade.
