Aims of Module
To integrate social and behavioural aspects of health and healthcare and principles of public health and pharmaceutical service provision to the practice of pharmacy.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

use social and behavioural aspects of health and healthcare to critically evaluate public policy and pharmacy practice.

apply knowledge and understanding of attitudes to and determinants of health, health promotion and protection and concordance to the practice of pharmacy.

recognise and discuss the principles and practice of pharmaceutical public health.

4. |
apply knowledge and understanding of the framework for provision of pharmaceutical services and the principles of clinical governance.

5. |
identify, evaluate and respond to ethical dilemmas in pharmacy practice in the context of the relevant legislation and policy context.

Indicative Module Content
Sociology and attitudes to health and healthcare. Inequalities in health. Determinants of health. Psychosocial influences on health and delivery of healthcare. Health promotion and protection. Compliance, concordance patient-centred care and self-care. Public/population health. Epidemiology. Organisation of the National Health Service. Provision of pharmaceutical services. Clinical governance and risk management. Ethics and ethical decision making. The pharmacy code of ethics and disciplinary procedures of the Pharmacy Regulator.

Mode of Delivery
Lectures, coursework sessions which include group and individual problem solving exercises and tutorial sessions, discussion of ethical dilemmas. Directed study includes directed reading in support of lectures and coursework, self-assessment and research for essay.

| A 2 hour examination paper with a choice of 3 out of 4 essay questions, each question being equally weighted. This examination contributes 50% towards the final Module Grade.
A 2000 word essay on a choice of title. This essay will contribute 50% towards the final Module Grade.
