1 | Describe microorganisms of relevance to healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry as causative agents of infection and contamination. |
2 | Explain the action of antimicrobial agents. |
3 | Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the practical aspects of pharmaceutical microbiology. |
4 | Perform practical procedures to demonstrate competence of aseptic manipulation. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
An application of the impact of microorganisms upon health and production of pharmaceuticals, and the role antimicrobials within this. Topics include: structure and function of components of microorganisms as infective agents of pharmaceutical relevance; antimicrobial agents and factors influencing activity; microbial genetics and antibiotic resistance; infectious diseases and the immune system for host defence; infection control; microbial contamination; product spoilage and antimicrobial preservation. |

The module grade represents Component 1 (EX1) weighted as 100% and Component 2 (CW1) is pass/unsuccessful. A minimum module of grade D or better is required to pass the module. Non-submission of any component will result in an NS grade. | |

A | EX1: a score of 70% or above is required and a Pass in CW1. |
B | EX1: a score of between 60-69% is required and a Pass in CW1. |
C | EX1: a score of between 50-59% is required and a Pass in CW1. |
D | EX1: a score of between 40-49% is required and a Pass in CW1. |
E | EX1: a score of between 35-39% is required and a Pass in CW1. |
F | EX1: a score of less than 35% and/or an unsuccessful attempt (i.e. Fail) in CW1. |
