Aims of Module

To provide an understanding of the legislation relevant to the practice of pharmacy and wider issues of communication, compliance and concordance.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. apply knowledge and understanding of the legal requirements for the supply of pharmaceutical products and services.
2. effectively communicate patient care issues and discuss in a clear and systematic manner.
3. appreciate the scope, significance and management of compliance and concordance in relation to patient care.

Indicative Module Content

Communication skills, counselling, advice, compliance and concordance.
Systematic coverage of the purpose and effect of statutes and subordinate legislation (all as currently amended) which affect the practice of pharmacy.

Mode of Delivery

Lectures, coursework sessions which include individual problem solving exercises and tutorial sessions. Managed student centred learning includes directed reading in support of lectures and coursework and self-assessment exercises.

Assessment Plan

Examination 1

Professional practice assessment will consist of problem solving exercises and skills assessment.
Coursework is assessed using a range of methods, and will include assessment of written and oral communication skills.

One written two hour examination consisting of open and closed book sections will be held at the end of the module.
A satisfactory performance must be demonstrated in all assessments by achieving a minimum mark of Grade 4 in the coursework aggregate and exam aggregate. This module cannot be passed by condonement.
