Aims of Module
To introduce the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for professional pharmacy practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate an awareness of the legal, professional and ethical responsibilities required of a pharmacist.
2 Acquire a foundation in the practical skills required of a pharmacist.
3 Develop an understanding of the communication and teamworking skills required of a pharmacist.
4 Reflect on personal and professional aspects of pharmacy practice.

Indicative Module Content
An introduction to aspects of the practice of pharmacy relating to the patient, the medicine and the profession, allowing students to explore the knowledge and skills required by a pharmacist and to begin to develop the relevant attributes. Topics include: exploring pharmacists’ professional responsibilities, including ethical responsibilities, responding to symptoms, principles of pharmaceutical care and public health; introduction to legislation concerning the supply of medicines; numeracy, interpersonal, communication and teamworking skills, information retrieval and study skills; interprofessional working including an awareness of the roles of other healthcare professionals; the drug journey from discovery through to patient use; pharmaceutical calculations.

Module Delivery
Lectures, coursework sessions, placement activity, group and individual based problem-solving activities, tutorials and directed study activities.
