Aims of Module
To enable the student to consolidate and further develop their proficiency within their defined area of practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Reflect and critically evaluate their skills, knowledge and attributes required to fulfill the role of the specialist community public health nurse in their defined area of practice.
2 Critically appraise the four pillars of advanced practice to promote practice.
3 Critically explore, analyse and evaluate an appropriate are of personal development relevant to specialist community public health nursing.
4 Critically evaluate the contemporary pharmacological knowledge base to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively from the nurse prescriber's formulary for community practitioners and in line with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Prescribing Competency Framework.

Indicative Module Content
The student will critically reflect on practice and apply core knowledge, skills and attributes required as a specialist community public health nurse in their defined area of practice including: Continuing professional development; Personal development planning; Management and leadership; Team working; Project management; Evidence informed decision making; Reflection on professional practice. V100 Prescribing - Consultation; Decision-making and therapy including referral; Anatomical and physiological differences across the lifespan; Influences on and psychology of prescribing; Prescribing in a team context; Clinical pharmacology including the effects of co-morbidity; Numeracy and drug calculations; Principles and methods of patient monitoring; Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to prescribing; Legal, policy and ethical aspects; Licensed and unlicensed drugs; Professional accountability; Prescribing in the public health context.

Module Delivery
This module will be delivered via blended learning including learning in practice, 2 days attendance at University incorporating the prescribing element and supporting online resources.

ASSESSMENT PLAN

Component 1
Type: Examination Weighting: 50% Outcomes Assessed: 4
Description: V100 Prescribing Examination The exam has a pass grade of 80% for the pharmacology element and 100% for the numeracy element.
Component 2
Type: Coursework Weighting: 50% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 2, 3, 4
Description: This module will be assessed by practice portfolio including achievement of the standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nurses and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Prescribing Competency Framework.

C1 = Examination assessed as pass/fail (80% for the pharmacology element and 100% for the numeracy element); C2 = Practice Portfolio assessed as pass/fail.

NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination

ADDITIONAL NOTES
A minimum 10 weeks whole time equivalent will be spent in practice. HV and SN students will undertake an additional 3 weeks Alternative Practice hours to be completed within the Module time frame of either NUM074 or NUM078/98. This will be negotiated with the Health Board/Health and Social Care Partnership and by confirmed by completion of NUM078/NUM098.
