Aims of Module
To enable the student to explore the concepts of leading and advancing practice within the policy context of health and social care modernisation and redesign, where health professionals are actively engaged in the design, development and delivery of services.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explore the professional, regulatory and legal positions within advancing healthcare practice and be able to apply this to their professional role.
2 Critically evaluate leadership theories and concepts applicable to health and social care.
3 Critically evaluate the change process and its application to improvement methodology.
4 Critically examine approaches to the facilitation of professional development.
5 Critically reflect on the use of problem-solving strategies in the use of clinical judgement and decision-making practice.

Indicative Module Content
Advanced Practice; Contemporary policy perspectives on health and social care leadership; Methodology improvement; Quality improvement tools and processes; Person-centred care; Understanding and managing change in a dynamic environment; Leadership styles; Leadership skills; Emotional intelligence; Clinical supervision, Mentoring and other facilitative relationships; Facilitation of professional development; Personal and professional development planning; Clinical decision-making and problem-solving; Clinical judgement.
