Aims of Module
To prepare healthcare practitioners to prescribe within the legislation relevant to their profession.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically evaluate the requirements for undertaking a comprehensive consultation and clinical assessment to inform and guide prescribing decision making.
2 Critically evaluate contemporary pharmacological knowledge to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively within the legislation appropriate to the profession.
3 Critically appraise the process of reviewing evidence relevant to prescribing practice, considering all factors, which may affect treatment options and shared decision making.
4 Critically evaluate the barriers and supporting factors relevant to collaborative working in relation to prescribing practice.
5 Reflect upon and summarise key learning for effective prescribing practice, taking into consideration how this will be developed following qualification.

Indicative Module Content
Independent and supplementary prescribing; Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Competency Framework; Consultation and clinical assessment; Physical, emotional, social, medical and medication history, including allergies and intolerances. Considering the options; Non-pharmacological (including no treatment) and pharmacological options to modifying disease and promoting health; Referral; Economic influences. British National Formulary (BNF); Pharmacology; Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics; Safety and adverse drug reactions. Reaching a shared decision; Psychology of decision making and working in partnership with users/carers; Influences on prescribing. Prescribing in an evidence-based context; Potential misuse of medicines; Provision of accurate information; Processes of monitoring and follow-up; Polypharmacy and deprescribing; Prescribing governance; Professional accountability; Improving prescribing practice; Interprofessional collaboration; Prescribing contexts including non-NHS/private practice.

Description: Portfolio including learning log, clinical competencies and detailed examination in practice.
Component 2
Type: Examination Weighting: 33% Outcomes Assessed: 2
Description: Prescribing and pharmacology multiple choice/open book exam (80% pass mark).
Component 3
Type: Examination Weighting: 33% Outcomes Assessed: 2
Description: Numeracy examination

Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:
A C1 = A; C2 = Pass; C3 = Pass
B C1 = B; C2 = Pass; C3 = Pass
C C1 = C; C2 = Pass; C3 = Pass
D C1 = D; C2 = Pass; C3 = Pass
E If an E grade is achieved for component 1 and/or fail/unsuccessful for component 2 and/or fail/unsuccessful for component 3, then the component failed/unsuccessful (1,2,3 or any combination) must be re-submitted for successful achievement of the module.
F If an F grade is achieved for component 1 and/or fail/unsuccessful for component 2 and/or fail/unsuccessful for component 3, then the component failed/unsuccessful (1,2,3 or any combination) must be re-submitted for successful achievement of the module.

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module [1] Valid registration with the Health and Care Professions Council or the Nursing and Midwifery Council. [2] Nurses/midwives and relevant allied health professionals are required to have a minimum of one years' relevant post registration experience. [3] Demonstrate an ability to study at SCQF level 10. [4] Written approval from the employer that applicant and service requirements for prescribing clinical governance are fulfilled. [5] Written approval from a Prescribing Practice Assessor and a Prescribing Practice Supervisor who meet the criteria as outlined by the NMC and the RPS.
