Aims of Module
To enable the student to develop a critical approach to diabetes management in health and social care settings.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically examine the impact of local and national political, health and social care agendas on the management of diabetes.
2 Critically evaluate approaches for holistic assessment of persons with diabetes.
3 Critically review therapeutic interventions of persons with diabetes in a multi-agency context.
4 Critically evaluate psychosocial concepts and strategies to support persons with diabetes and their families and carers.
5 Explore and critically review emerging strategies to manage persons with diabetes.

Indicative Module Content
National and local policy; Epidemiology; Types of diabetes; Aetiology and physiology; Pathophysiology; Oral medications and insulin; Assessment; Care planning; Interventions; Self-management; eHealth; Diabetes complications; End of life care; Complexities within diabetes e.g. dementia, eating disorders; Inter agency working; Health improvement; Psychosocial issues; Quality improvement; Safety.
