Aims of Module
To enable the student to critically explore strategies to protect vulnerable individuals, families and groups.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically appraise theories and concepts of abuse connecting to current legislation, policies and guidelines.
2 Critically examine frameworks used to manage risk and resilience of individuals and families.
3 Formulate and synthesise strategies when working with children, young people and other vulnerable individuals and groups.
4 Critically appraise role and responsibilities within an interagency work to protect children, young people and other vulnerable individuals and groups.
5 Critically evaluate their personal and professional development in relation to working with children, young people and other vulnerable individuals and groups.

Indicative Module Content
Review of attachment theory; Assessment of vulnerability and risk; Safeguard and protect children; Vulnerable individuals and groups, for example: looked after children, young carers, homelessness; Mental wellbeing; Infant mental health; Gender based violence; Sexual health and relationships including sexual exploitation and LGBT coercive controlling tactics; Substance misuse; Youth justice; Radicalisation; Advanced levels of targeted intervention; Strength based and outcome focused approaches; Protective factors; Multi-agency working; Managing conflict and complexity; Parenting strategies; Courageous conversations; Professional, ethical and legal frameworks; Policy, guidelines and legislation; Case supervision; Accountability; Leadership; Professional development; Serious case reviews.
