Aims of Module | |||

To enable the student to develop a critical approach to pain management in the health setting utilising the biopsychosocial model of pain. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Evaluate the principles and practices that underpin a biopsychosocial approach to management of pain. |
2 | Critically reflect on their contribution towards improved outcomes for patients with pain problems. |
3 | Critically appraise evidence-based approaches to pain management. |
4 | Synthesise strategies to implement and evaluate the clinical effectiveness in practice. |
5 | Explore and review quality, safety, organisational and global issues in pain management. |
Indicative Module Content |

Historical and epidemiological perspectives of pain; The biopsychosocial model of pain; Neurobiology of pain; Assessment of pain; Pharmacological and interventional pain management; Non-pharmacological pain management; Pain conditions; Self-care; Contemporary, organisational and global pain issues. |
