Aims of Module
To enable the student to develop a critical approach to pain management in the health setting utilising the biopsychosocial model of pain.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Evaluate the principles and practices that underpin a biopsychosocial approach to management of pain.
2 Critically reflect on their contribution towards improved outcomes for patients with pain problems.
3 Critically appraise evidence-based approaches to pain management.
4 Synthesise strategies to implement and evaluate the clinical effectiveness in practice.
5 Explore and review quality, safety, organisational and global issues in pain management.

Indicative Module Content
Historical and epidemiological perspectives of pain; The biopsychosocial model of pain; Neurobiology of pain; Assessment of pain; Pharmacological and interventional pain management; Non-pharmacological pain management; Pain conditions; Self-care; Contemporary, organisational and global pain issues.
