Aims of Module
To provide a comprehensive understanding of childhood obesity from a molecular level to the epidemiology of the disease, and a review of the possible preventative and treatment options appropriate for children of different ages.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss the causes of childhood obesity.
2 Critically evaluate a range of possible approaches for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
3 Discuss the consequences of childhood obesity in epidemiological terms.
4 Critically evaluate interventions which have tackled childhood obesity.

Indicative Module Content
Childhood obesity at the molecular level; Biological growth of the systems and structures of the body: somatic, skeletal and sexual maturation; Environmental and cultural aspects of obesity; Epidemiological aspects of incidence and prevalence; Male and female differences in obesity and approaches to tackling it; Preventative and treatment approaches and initiatives for different settings.
