Aims of Module
To prepare the student to prescribe within the legislation relevant to their profession.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically appraise models of consultation and assessment tools in relation to prescribing.
2 Critically evaluate the contemporary pharmacological knowledge base to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively within the legislation relevant to your profession.
3 Integrate the concepts and knowledge of evidence based practice through critical reflection in a professional context.
4 Critically appraise current issues and non medical factors impacting upon and influencing prescribing practice.
5 Reflect and critically evaluate on their contribution to the multidisciplinary team within a framework of professional accountability and responsibility in relation to prescribing.

Indicative Module Content
Consultation; Decision-making and therapy including referral; Anatomical and physiological differences across the lifespan; Influences on and psychology of prescribing; Prescribing in a team context; Clinical pharmacology including the effects of co-morbidity; Numeracy and drug calculations; Personal formularies; Principles and methods of patient monitoring; Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to prescribing; Legal, policy and ethical aspects; Licensed and unlicensed drugs; Professional accountability and responsibility; Prescribing of botulinum toxin and related products; Prescribing in the public health context; Supplementary prescribing; Development of clinical management plans; Documentation of clinical management plans; Interface between multiple prescribers; Reflective approaches and continuing professional development.

Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:
A C1 = A, C2 = Pass, C3 = Pass.
B C1 = B, C2 = Pass, C3 = Pass.
C C1 = C, C2 = Pass, C3 = Pass.
D C1 = D, C2 = Pass, C3 = Pass.
E C1 = E, C2 = Refer, C3 = Refer. If an E grade or a Refer is achieved for one component, only the referred piece needs to be resubmitted/resat.
F C1 = F, C2 = Refer, C3 = Refer. If an F grade or a Refer is achieved for one component, only the referred piece needs to be resubmitted/resat.

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module 1.Valid registration with the Health and Care Professions Council or the Nursing and Midwifery Council. 2.Nurse/midwives and relevant allied health professionals are required to have a mimum of three years relevant post registration experience and have been in the clinical field in which they intend to prescribe from for at least one year preceding application. 3.Demonstrate an ability to study at SCQF level 10. 4.Written approval from the employer that requirements of the local prescribing clinical governance infrastructure are fulfilled. 5.Written confirmation from a designated prescribing assessor who meets the criteria outlined by the National Prescribing Centre.
