Aims of Module
To enable the student to develop a critical understanding of the theories, principles and concepts that underpin public health practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Synthesize the fundamental concepts and principles of public health working.
2 Critically analyse the theories, concepts and principles of the health needs assessment of individuals, families and/or communities.
3 Explore the causes and consequences of poverty, inequality, vulnerability and social exclusion.
4 Examine the theoretical basis of a range of strategies and approaches to maintain and promote public health.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Students undertaking this module as part of a NMC Specialist Community Public Health Nursing approved pathway are required to negotiate and undertake 3 weeks practice experience which will enable them to understand the context of public health practice in a variety of settings.
