Prerequisites for Module

Students must be a first level nurse or midwife and have successfully completed module NU4801 if undertaking the BSc (Hons) Public Health Nursing course or equivalent.

Aims of Module

To enable the student to consolidate and further develop their proficiency within their specific zone of community health practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Initiate innovative development in clinical practice to address current health issues and/or initiatives in community health nursing.
2. Participate effectively in muli-agency team working, applying key management and leadership principles to promote development within practice.
3. Appraise their ability to make evidence informed decisions and deal with complex situations.
4. Review their developing knowledge, skills and values in their negotiated zone of professional practice.
5. Prescribe safely, effectively and cost efficiently from the Community Nurse Practitioner formulary.

Indicative Module Content

Continuing professional development; personal development planning, management and leadership, team working; project management, evidence informed decision making, prescribing theory, reflection on professional practice.

Mode of Delivery

Blended learning approach including learning in practice . For those opting to undertake the prescribing element there will be 2 days attendance at University.

Component 2: National prescribing examination for those undertaking the prescribing element, which has a pass grade of 80% for the pharmacology element and 100% for the numeracy. Please note the exam does not contribute to the overall module grade.

Component 1: Practice portfolio including achievement of public health proficiencies. LO5 is only applicable to those undertaking the prescribing element.

Additional Notes

A minimum of 13 weeks whole time equivalent will be spent in practice. The V100 is an optional element of this module for those undertaking the BSc(Hons) Public Health Nursing course or the BSc (Hons)Occupational Health Practice course.
