Aims of Module
To develop the student's understanding of strategies to protect children and young people and others vulnerable to abuse and violence.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Analyse methods and tools to assess complex health and social needs of individuals and families and ways to prevent, reduce, and manage needs and risks.
2 Critically analyse theories of abuse and violence, and legislation, policies and guidelines to protect children, young people, and others vulnerable to abuse.
3 Examine professional role, accountability, skills and criteria for good practice in multi-agency work to protect children, young people, adults, and vulnerable groups.
4 Appraise strategies to support children, young people, and others vulnerable to abuse.

Review of life transitions and factors affecting family health; Attachment theory, resilience; Assessment of vulnerability and risk; Child protection and safeguarding; Gender based violence; Levels of intervention; Strength based and solution focussed approaches; Therapeutic relationships and role boundaries; Advanced communication skills; Counselling theory; Managing conflict and complexity; Partnership working; Teaching and learning; Group work; Public health programmes; Professional, ethical and legal frameworks for protection of children, young people and other vulnerable groups; Case and clinical supervision.
