Aims of Module
To develop the student's understanding of family focused public health practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically analyse family theory and multiple factors that affect the health and social well-being of family members and groups.
2 Compare and contrast stages of human development across the lifespan relevant to their zone of practice.
3 Appraise evidence and ways to enable family members and groups to develop abilities and use resources to manage and improve their health and social well-being.
4 Analyse methods and tools to assess health and social needs of individuals and families.
5 Recognise and evaluate parenting strategies.

Indicative Module Content
Family theory; Trends and diversity; Social policy and healthy public policy; Review of life transitions and factors affecting family health; Attachment theory; Neuroscience; Resilience; Child health surveillance and monitoring programmes; Levels of intervention; Parenting strategies; Minor ailments; Family nutrition; Infant feeding; Therapeutic relationships and role boundaries; Advanced communication skills; Counselling theory; Partnership working; Teaching and learning; Group work; Public health programmes.
