Aims of Module
To enable the student to make evidence informed decisions and lead on palliative care issues in any healthcare setting.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explore the evidence related to palliative care and how this supports holistic needs assessment of the patient and their family.
2 Critically appraise the management and palliation of physical and psychological symptoms of patients.
3 Critically examine the therapeutic and supportive role of health and social care professionals in developing and leading care in partnership with patients, relatives, and carers.
4 Review the impact of professional and ethical issues on the care of the palliative patient.
5 Analyse the factors which impact on communication with the palliative patient, their family and the wider team.

Social context of life limiting illness; Side effects of treatment; Ethical issues in palliative care; Historical context of palliative care; Concepts of palliative care; Principles of symptom management including pain, nausea, constipation, nutritional difficulties and psychological issues; Communication; End of life care; Do not resuscitate decision; Patient journey; Holistic needs assessment; Acute exacerbations and palliative care emergencies; Specialist versus generalist care; Alternative support strategies including complementary therapies; Interprofessional dynamics and leadership; carers; Psychological and spiritual care; Anticipatory and advance care planning including emergency prescribing.
