Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Explore the evidence related to palliative care and how this supports holistic needs assessment of the patient and their family. |
2 | Critically appraise the management and palliation of physical and psychological symptoms of patients. |
3 | Critically examine the therapeutic and supportive role of health and social care professionals in developing and leading care in partnership with patients, relatives, and carers. |
4 | Review the impact of professional and ethical issues on the care of the palliative patient. |
5 | Analyse the factors which impact on communication with the palliative patient, their family and the wider team. |

Social context of life limiting illness; Side effects of treatment; Ethical issues in palliative care; Historical context of palliative care; Concepts of palliative care; Principles of symptom management including pain, nausea, constipation, nutritional difficulties and psychological issues; Communication; End of life care; Do not resuscitate decision; Patient journey; Holistic needs assessment; Acute exacerbations and palliative care emergencies; Specialist versus generalist care; Alternative support strategies including complementary therapies; Interprofessional dynamics and leadership; carers; Psychological and spiritual care; Anticipatory and advance care planning including emergency prescribing. |
