Aims of Module

To enable the student to demonstrate competent practice in the context of acute and unscheduled mental health care at SCQF level 10 as specified within the performance expectations set out in the OAR.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate achievement of all of the NMC competencies in practice taking account of the acute and unscheduled care context and the performance expectations for SCQF level 10.
2. Demonstrate achievement of the NMC Essential Skills taking account of the acute and unscheduled care context.
3. Demonstrate achievement of mandatory health and safety requirements as defined by the School and service provider partners.
4. Demonstrates autonomous practice in applying theories and principles related to professional values, communication, leadership and management, nursing practice and decision making.

Indicative Module Content

The NMC 34 generic and 22 field specific standards for competency for entry to the professional register. These sit within the domains of Professional values, Communication and interpersonal skills, Nursing practice and decision-making and Leadership, management and team working. The NMC defined essential skills which sit within 5 clusters; care compassion and communication, organisational aspects of care, infection prevention and control, nutrition and fluid management, medicines management. The NMC defined essential skills which includes the administration of medicines and a range of numerical skills to be demonstrated in practice. Acute and Unscheduled mental health nursing.

Additional Notes

This is a practice module. The students undertake 30 hours per week for 12 weeks, (360 hours). The student must compelte 240 hours in order to be assessed and graded. The named sign-off mentor must sign the verification of competence part of the OAR.
