Aims of Module
To enable the student to become independent and confident in meeting Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards of proficiency by demonstrating safe, woman-centred midwifery care with indirect supervision.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate independent evidence-based practice to achieve the proficiencies as detailed in NMC Standards of Proficiency for Midwives (NMC, 2019).
2 Collaborate with multidisciplinary and multiagency colleagues to provide appropriate care and contribute to practice change.
3 Demonstrate postgraduate attributes of resourcefulness, flexibility and strength, self-care, critical and strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and leadership skills required for professional midwifery practice.
4 Demonstrate professional development, recognising how it can contribute to others' development and education, including women, other students and colleagues.
5 Employ quality improvement methodology to provide safe, effective, respectful, kind and compassionate midwifery care for women, newborn infants and their families.

Indicative Module Content
Preparation for practice; The NMC proficiencies for part 3 which are grouped under six domains: (1) Being an accountable, autonomous, professional midwife; (2) Safe and effective midwifery care: promoting and providing continuity of care and carer; (3) Universal care for all women and newborn infants; (4) Additional care for women and newborn infants with complications; (5) Promoting excellence: the midwife as colleague, scholar and leader; (6) The midwife as skilled practitioner.

Module Delivery
Practice learning experiences in a variety of health and social care environments that meet the NMC standards for student supervision and assessment (SSSA; 2018) and Quality Standards for Practice Learning (QSPL; NES 2020).

MODULE PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTOR
Explanatory Text
Practice Assessment Document assessed on a pass/fail basis by the Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor. The account of an episode of clinical care is assessed pass/fail by the Academic Assessor. Both components assess all of the same learning outcomes due to the practical basis of the module where the student will demonstrate in practice for component 1 and will critically analyse the evidence base for component 2.
Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:
Pass Pass grade awarded for all allocated practice learning environments and the account of an episode of clinical care.
Fail Fail awarded for one or more practice learning environments or/and the account of an episode of clinical care.
NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module Satisfactory completion of Stage 2 MSc Midwifery and evidence of achievement of the mandatory health and safety requirements as defined by the School and practice partners.
Corequisites for module None.
Precluded Modules None.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
In this clinical practice module students will undertake 40 hours per week in practice settings for 32 Weeks. There are two Practice Learning Experience (PLE) blocks, each with an assessment opportunity and also an opportunity to undertake an elective placement. To complete the module, student must have attended at least 70% of each allocated PLE to be assessed, achieve a pass grades in all PLEs and achieve all Stage 3 NMC proficiencies. This module is underpinned by the UNICEF baby friendly Initiative.
