Aims of Module
To enable the student to make evidence informed decisions in the context of healthcare.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Examine types of evidence that might be used to justify decisions and professional judgements.
2 Review the position of policy and legislation as a source of evidence informing healthcare.
3 Appraise the research and other available evidence in relation to contemporary healthcare.
4 Examine the influences on, and processes of, decision making within the context of healthcare.
5 Discuss the professional and ethical dimensions of evidence informed decision making.

Indicative Module Content
Decision making models; clinical reasoning; critical thinking; ethics of decision making; accountability; autonomy; legal and ethical issues; problem solving; delegation and prioritisation; clinical governance; risk assessment - predictive theories, policy development, policy analysis; social, political and economic issues; critical appraisal of evidence; audit; research; standards/guidelines/protocols; clinical effectiveness; evaluation; influencing and negotiating; practice development; clinical management and leadership skills; influencing changes in practice.
