Aims of Module
To enable the student to critically apply relevant theoretical concepts and frameworks to meet essential and complex physical and mental health care needs of the adult.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss the nursing management of complex physical and mental problems in acute/unscheduled and long term conditions using best evidence.
2 Justify the application of a range of clinical and therapeutic skills to inform therapeutic intervention in adults with complex physical and mental health needs.
3 Reflect upon the recognition and response to the changing needs of adults, families and carers during terminal illness.
4 Discuss nursing practice and decision making processes in relation to the management of acute emergencies and crisis situations.

Indicative Module Content
Contemporary issues in complex therapeutic interventions in adults; Complex physical and mental health care needs of the adult; Assessment and nursing management of physical and mental health related emergencies; Co-morbidity and physiological and psychological vulnerability; Invasive and non-invasive intervention related to the complex physical and mental healthcare needs of the adult; Pharmacology; Palliative care; illness, death, bereavement; Partnership working with people who have long term conditions; Extended nursing skills - male catheterisation, venepuncture, intravenous bolus, cannulation; airway management; ILS.
