Aims of Module

To develop participant’s knowledge and understanding of a selection of healthcare scenarios relevant in remote healthcare settings.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Explore current trends and communication challenges in managing an acutely unwell adult in a remote setting.
2. Review the use of pharmacological intervention potential for clients in remote healthcare.
3. Examine current approaches to managing minor illness and minor injury in a remote setting.
4. Justify appropriate management and support of people working in remote settings who have a long term condition.
5. Explore approaches to supporting clients with psychological disturbance in remote environments.

Indicative Module Content

Recognise a critically ill/injured patient, anticipate and monitor for deterioration in a critically ill or injured patient, ABCDE, Resuscitation, Common Life threatening emergencies, managing unpredictable behaviour and de-escalation techniques, clinical decision making, clinical management for selected long term conditions, polypharmacy, safe medication administration, minor injuries and minor ailments, differential diagnosis, clinical reasoning, evidence based practice, referral from a remote environment, prescribing, professional and legal issues.
