Aims of Module
To enable the student to develop and enhance their clinical assessment, judgement and decision making skills when working in remote environments.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Relate the aetiology and pathophysiology of selected clinical presentations in remote healthcare.
2 Review relevant knowledge of pharmacology for the major drug groups used pertinent to your specific remote environment.
3 Conduct a comprehensive physical and mental health assessment.
4 Interpret a variety of diagnostic tests and procedures based on initial clinical assessment findings.
5 Justify decision making based on clinical assessment findings to formulate an action plan.

Indicative Module Content
Anatomy & Physiology of body Systems; Related pathophysiology; Pharmacology, pharmacology of major drug groups; History taking and clinical examination of cardiac, respiratory, abdominal, endocrine, musculoskeletal, neurological, eyes and ears, nose and throat systems; ABCDE assessment; Mental health assessment; Interpretation of relevant diagnostic tests and procedures; Clinical judgement and decision making; Consultation skills; Referral from remote environment to appropriate centre; Communication skills (SBAR); Telemedicine; Distance support; Organisational protocols and standing orders; Clinical management plans.

Module Delivery
The module is delivered online with 4 contact days dedicated to teaching, learning & assessment of clinical assessment demonstrations, clinical practice and clinical assessment carried out in a simulated sick bay/remote environment.

ASSESSMENT PLAN

Type: Practical Exam Weighting: 60% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 3, 5
Description: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
Component 2
Type: Examination Weighting: 40% Outcomes Assessed: 2, 4
Description: Written examination.

Prerequisites for Module In addition to the SCQF level 9 entry requirements or equivalent, the student will hold the Health and Safety Offshore Medic Certificate or the equivalent prior to undertaking this module.
