Aims of Module
To provide the student with a foundation in cardiac nursing.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explore the concept of holism as applied to cardiac nursing.
2 Examine the pathophysiology of cardiac disease.
3 Explain the diagostic and monitoring procedures commonly encountered in cardiac care.
4 Discuss a range of treatment modalities for cardiac disease.
5 Demonstrate competence in caring for the individual with cardiac disease.

Indicative Module Content
Acute myocardial infarction; Acute coronary syndromes; Valve disease; Heart failure; Rhythm recognition; ECGs; Diagnostic tests; Invasive monitoring; Non-invasive monitoring; Intra-aortic balloon pump therapy; Thrombolytic therapy; Resuscitation; Pacing; Chest drains; Pharmacology; Inotropic support; Respiratory support; Cardiac surgery; Pain management; Wound management; Fluid management; Rehabilitation; Psychological support.

Module Delivery
The module will be delivered through a series of clinically based tutorials and a period of supervised clinical practice in a range of cardiac specialities.

MODULE PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTOR
Explanatory Text
C1 = Demonstration of a range of evidence through the compilation of a Clinical Learning Portfolio and achievement of competencies. C2 = Multiple choice and short answer examination. Students are required to pass both assessment components for module award.
