Aims of Module
To enable the student to demonstrate competent practice in Mental Health Nursing as defined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, at SCQF level 9 as specified in the performance expectations set out within the OAR.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1	Demonstrate achievement of all the NMC competencies for Mental Health Nursing in practice at SCQF level 9 as specified within the performance expectations set out within the OAR.
2	Demonstrate achievement of all of the NMC defined essential skills.
3	The student demonstrates the ability to work autonomously in applying relevant theories and principles in more complex care scenarios.
4	The student evaluates personal professional values, communication skills and principles of leadership, management and decision making in a range of placement environments.

Indicative Module Content
The NMC 34 generic and 22 field specific standards of competency for entry to the professional register. These sit within the domains of Professional values, Communication and interpersonal skills, Nursing practice and decision-making and Leadership, management and team working. The NMC defined essential skills which sit within 5 clusters; care compassion and communication, organisational aspects of care, infection prevention and control, nutrition and fluid management, medicines management. Medicines management includes the administration of medicines and a range of numerical skills to be demonstrated in practice. Mental Health Nursing Practice.

Indicative Module Content

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module	In addition to successful completion of Stage 2, the student must achieve a provisional pass for modules NU3665, NU3883, NU3886.
Corequisites for module	None.
Precluded Modules	None.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
This is a nursing practice module. Practice learning is carried out by B Nursing (Hons) students in a practice placement environment at 37.5 hours per week over an 8 week period (300 hours). In order to be assessed and graded, the student must achieve a minimum of 225 hours in practice. In addition, within practice learning the named mentor or another suitably qualified professional will sign off essential skills and competencies which must all be achieved by end of each practice module in stages 1 and 2. In stage 3, students should aim to achieve all essential skills cluster (ESC) competencies in each stage 3 practice module but as a minimum should achieve 80% in each practice module. Each ESC competency must be achieved at least once during stage 3.
