Aims of Module
To prepare the midwife to return to midwifery practice and achieve registration with the NMC.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss current health and social care policies relevant to midwifery practice, demonstrating an understanding of current organisation of care locally and nationally.
2 Evaluate the legal and ethical basis of midwifery practice.
3 Analyse personal effectiveness within the multidisciplinary team, evaluating the impact of professional development and competence affecting maternity care.
4 Demonstrate and apply knowledge of current issues, including teaching and learning, within midwifery practice.
5 Demonstrate achievement of clinical skills and competencies required for return to midwifery practice.

Indicative Module Content
Woman-centred midwifery care; Intrapartum care; Antenatal care; Postnatal care; Care of the neonate; Health and social care policy; Ethics; Personal development, Professional development; Legislation; Medicines management; Obstetric emergencies; Multidisciplinary working; UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative; Evidence-based practice.

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module Midwives undertaking this course must have previously completed an NMC approved Midwifery programme and be eligble to be registered as a midwife.
Corequisites for module None.
Precluded Modules None.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
The practice based element of the module requires the completion of 450 hours of clinical practice over a 12 week period in order to comply with the NMC requirements for Post-registration education and practice (PREP). Part time clinical practice can be arranged on an individual basis.
